The Goodbye

The Goodbye

Spotty watched as Chancellor Lyra moved toward the shuttle on the launch pad, her graceful figure framed against the metallic sheen of the imperial palace. A sense of fondness warmed her chest as she walked briskly to catch up. She had always appreciated Lyra’s unique blend of intellect and empathy—a rare combination that had made their alliance, and their friendship, all the more meaningful.

"Lyra," Spotty called out, a playful smile dancing on her lips, "you didn’t really think I’d let you leave without saying goodbye, did you?" She reached out and enveloped Lyra in a warm hug, feeling the familiar comfort of her friend's presence. For a moment, she allowed herself to forget the weight of her responsibilities as Empress, to simply enjoy the closeness of a trusted friend.

As she pulled back from the hug, Spotty’s smile lingered, though there was a touch of wistfulness in her eyes. “Goodbye, Lyra,” she said softly. “Visit me as soon as you can, okay? Or should I visit you instead?” She added with a light chuckle, trying to mask the bittersweet feeling of parting. Deep down, she knew Lyra’s departure was necessary—both had their duties in their respective worlds. Still, the thought of not seeing her friend for an indeterminate amount of time weighed heavily on her heart.

Inwardly, Spotty hoped that Lyra would take her up on the offer to visit soon. Their time together was always a welcome reprieve from the unrelenting duties of leadership. She valued these moments of genuine connection, knowing they were all too rare in her position.

Lyra's Point of View

Lyra stood at the threshold of the shuttle, feeling the gentle hum of the engines beneath her feet. She was ready to return to her home universe, but a part of her felt a pang of sadness. Her time in the Empire had been filled with strategic discussions, negotiations, and moments of camaraderie with Spotty. Despite the serious nature of their work, there had been moments of laughter and warmth that she cherished deeply.

Just as she was about to board, she heard Spotty's voice and turned to see her friend approaching. A smile spread across Lyra's face, her heart lifting slightly. “Spotty,” she greeted, allowing herself to be pulled into a hug. The embrace was warm and familiar, reminding Lyra of how much she valued their friendship. She had always admired Spotty’s strength and determination, but it was moments like these that reminded her of the softer side of the Empress, the side that cared deeply for those close to her.

When Spotty released her, Lyra looked into her friend's eyes and saw the mix of emotions there—pride, affection, a hint of sadness. It mirrored her own feelings. She laughed softly at Spotty’s suggestion. “I’ll miss you too, Spotty,” she replied warmly. “But I promise, I’ll be back before you know it. And if you do decide to visit me instead, you know you’re always welcome.” Her voice was sincere, her gaze steady. She wanted Spotty to know that their bond extended beyond their roles and duties.

As she turned to board the shuttle, Lyra felt a mix of anticipation and reluctance. She was eager to return to her people and continue her work, but leaving Spotty and the Empire behind, even temporarily, tugged at her heart. She knew, however, that this wasn’t a goodbye forever. Their paths would cross again soon—of that, she was certain.

As the shuttle door closed, Lyra gave one last wave to Spotty, who stood watching from the launch pad. The engines roared to life, and the shuttle began its ascent. Lyra settled into her seat, still feeling the warmth of Spotty’s hug. She allowed herself a moment to reflect on their friendship, the rare connection they shared across universes. She knew that no matter the distance, they would always find a way back to each other.
